Kente Registry
1. Purpose
The Verification & Authentication Policy outlines the principles, standards, and review processes used by Kente Registry to assess submissions relating to:
- Kente design patterns
- Individual woven cloth pieces
- Master Weavers
- Weaving communities
The goal of verification is to preserve authenticity, protect cultural heritage, and ensure that the registry remains accurate, respectful, and credible.
2. Scope of Verification
Kente Registry may review and assess:
- Design Submissions – Documentation of named patterns, symbolic meanings, and historical references.
- Cloth Authentication Requests – Assessment of a specific woven piece claimed to be authentic Kente.
- Master Weaver Profiles – Verification of training, lineage, and community recognition.
- Community Listings – Confirmation of recognised weaving towns or regions.
Verification does not constitute legal certification, intellectual property registration, or government endorsement unless expressly stated.
3. Guiding Principles
All verification decisions are guided by the following principles:
- Accuracy – Information must be supported by credible documentation or community validation.
- Respect – Cultural knowledge is treated with dignity and sensitivity.
- Transparency – The review process follows defined criteria.
- Independence – Decisions are made without commercial bias.
- Integrity – False or misleading claims will not be published.
4. Submission Requirements
To be considered for verification, submissions should include sufficient supporting material, such as:
- Clear photographs (multiple angles where relevant)
- Description of pattern name and symbolic meaning
- Community or town of origin
- Weaver identification (where applicable)
- Evidence of apprenticeship or lineage (for Master Weavers)
- Historical or oral documentation, where available
Incomplete submissions may be returned for further information.
5. Review Process
- Initial Screening – Submission is reviewed for completeness.
- Cultural & Technical Assessment – Pattern structure, weaving method, symbolism, and claimed origin are evaluated.
- Community Cross-Reference (where possible) – Claims may be validated through recognised community sources or established weavers.
- Decision – The submission is either:
- Verified and published
- Published with notation
- Returned for clarification
- Declined
Kente Registry reserves the right to request additional documentation at any stage.
6. Publication & Attribution
Once verified:
- The submission may be published within the Registry database.
- Proper attribution will be given to the weaver, community, or contributor (subject to consent).
- Kente Registry does not claim ownership of submitted designs.
All intellectual and cultural rights remain with the original creators and communities unless otherwise legally documented.
7. Limitations
Verification by Kente Registry:
- Is based on information available at the time of review
- Does not guarantee historical certainty where oral traditions vary
- Does not replace government cultural designation systems
- Does not function as a legal patent, trademark, or copyright registration
Kente traditions are living and evolving; interpretations may differ across regions.
8. Ethical Use & Misrepresentation
Submissions found to contain:
- Deliberate misinformation
- Misappropriation of community identity
- Fraudulent authorship claims
may be rejected and permanently excluded from the Registry.
Kente Registry reserves the right to remove previously published entries if new evidence emerges.
9. Amendments
This policy may be updated periodically to reflect improvements in verification standards, cultural consultation practices, and registry governance.
The most current version will always be published on this page.
