Recording the Weavers, Designs, and Cloths of Kente for All Time
Preserving the identities, meanings, and histories behind one of the world’s most recognisable textiles.
Kente is not just a textile, it is a living archive of Ghanaian philosophy, identity, lineage, and storytelling. Each pattern carries centuries of meaning, woven by master artisans whose skill has been handed down across generations.
Kente is not just a textile, it is a living archive of Ghanaian philosophy, identity, lineage, and storytelling.
The Registry begins with a founding cohort of master weavers and cloths, and grows through ongoing fieldwork across Ghana and the diaspora.
Legal Foundation
Only cloth woven using traditional methods in approved Ghanaian weaving communities can be marketed as “Kente.” We translate this legal protection into a global, accessible digital system.
Kente is one of the most globally recognisable textiles on earth, yet the identities of many of its weavers and designs remain undocumented. The Kente Registry exists to record them before they are lost to history.
We are recording them now
Registration is now open. The record is being built.
From the Registry

Master Weavers
A living record of the artisans who keep Kente alive, their lineages, their signature patterns, and the quiet discipline of their craft.

Cloth Profiles
A structured record of each pattern, its name, meaning, origin, and the weavers who keep it alive. Compiled in partnership with Ghana’s weaving communities.
