Building Something That Endures
Partners and Sponsors
Together, we honour the weavers and safeguard a timeless heritage
Kente Registry is a young organisation with an ambitious and enduring purpose: to document, authenticate, and preserve the living tradition of kente cloth for generations not yet born.
We are in our founding chapter. The registry is being built carefully, weave by weave, record by record, and we have not yet formalised partnerships with external organisations. But we know that the work ahead is too large and too important for any single institution to carry alone.
Stories Never Written Down
Across the weaving towns of Ghana, in Bonwire, in Agotime-Kpetoe, in the quieter villages where master weavers still work at hand-looms their grandfathers built, there are cloths whose stories have never been written down, and weavers whose names have never been registered anywhere. Some of those weavers are elderly. Some of those cloths are already in museum collections far from home, held without full documentation of who made them, or why, or what they mean.
The Kente Registry exists to change that. We assign permanent registry identifiers to documented cloths. We record the names, techniques, and lineages of the weavers behind them. We build an open, verifiable archive, one that belongs to the weaving communities themselves, not to any single government, collector, or institution.
This work requires presence in the field, investment in technology, and sustained relationships with cultural institutions, universities, and communities across West Africa and the diaspora.
We Welcome Conversations
We welcome conversations with organisations whose values align with ours.
A Registry, Not a Project
We are not building a project. We are building a registry, something designed to persist, to grow, and to be used by researchers, weavers, collectors, and cultural institutions for decades to come. The partners who join us in these early years will be part of a founding story worth telling.
Every cloth we document is a small act of permanence in a world that forgets too quickly. Every weaver whose name is recorded becomes, in some measure, immortal.
We would be glad to explore what that means alongside you.
